EIF project launch event – watch the video!

Rebecca Harrison, EIF Project Lead

On a very warm September afternoon (as if further proof was needed that we need
to address the climate emergency), the Environmental Impact of Filmmaking team
officially launched the project and our initial findings. Held at BFI Stephen Street on
September 7, 2023, the event hosted guests from across the screen sectors,
including film studios, broadcasters, production companies, journalism, asset
management and sustainability consultancies.

The research team – from The Open University and BAFTA albert – outlined the
project’s aims and shared findings from our first case study, which contrasts the
carbon emissions generated by making a practical costume with that of a CGI Artoo
Detoo. As you’ll see in our case study write-up (where you can also use our
calculator tool to predict how your own practical/digital assets might compare), there
are some surprising results!

We were delighted to meet so many people interested in more ecologically
sustainable working practices. Further case study write-ups, and our second
calculator, will be appearing on the site in the coming weeks. For now, you can watch the
launch presentation in full below, or on our Resources page.

The video includes British Sign Language and is fully captioned. Thanks to Deborah
McLeod for providing BSL and to Academic Audio Transcription for captioning.
